Trailblazers is a community connection project that shares the stories of people making a positive impact in the Ottawa area. Ottawa veg Fest invites two CBC Trailblazers to share how they earned the nod by CBC.
Tom Marcantonio is a champion of community gardening and sustainable food with a vision for “50 by 50,” a goal for Ottawa to grow 50 per cent of its own food by 2050. Over the past 10 years, Marcantonio has visited schools to share his knowledge of sustainable, urban, community farming practices. So far, 10 Ottawa highschools have had their own gardens installed with his help, and an 11th garden at Sir Guy Carleton Secondary School is underway.
Karyn Boswell runs Penny Lane Farm Sanctuary, which saves abused, neglected and abandoned animals, providing love, medical attention, food and shelter — for life.Karyn provides homes for horses, cows, cats, pigs, turkeys, geese, ducks, chickens, roosters, goats, sheep and llamas.
